Packing Your Bathroom

by Greg - Your Mover! on February 15, 2012

Your bathroom may be one of the smallest rooms in your house, but that doesn’t mean it will be the easiest one to pack.  For one thing, many of the items in your bathroom are necessities that you use every day, so they can’t be packed up until the last minute.  The experts at Jay’s, your Calgary moving company have some tips to help when you’re packing your bathroom.

Bathroom, washroom, loo, privy, water closet, lavatory, restroom or powder room, whatever you call it at your house, it’s the same sort of place, containing similar items and they need to be packed when the time comes for you to move.

The first thing to do when packing your bathroom is determine which items must be moved and which you should use up, throw away, or donate.  Well, I’m not sure about that last part; there are probably few bathroom items that are fit for donation!  But you probably have things that should be tossed out, items like:

Medications – take this opportunity to check the expiry dates of any medications and safely dispose of those that are old.  Do not flush them down the toilet or empty them into the drain. Medicines can cause environmental damage and contamination.  You can properly dispose of medications at your local household hazardous waste facility.

Cosmetics – Lotions and creams, mascara and lipsticks only have a shelf life of six months to a year.  Powdered cosmetics, eye and brow pencils last a little longer if kept meticulously clean.  If you find old cosmetics or products that you no longer use – trash them rather than packing them, there’s no need to clutter up your new bathroom!

Cleaning products – Try to use them up; you need to clean the bathroom before you move anyways.  Transporting cleaning products is not recommended in case of spillage, too many cleaning products are toxic or at the least, damaging to other goods in your shipment.

Your bathroom accessories like the shower curtain, bath mats, toilet brush and wastebasket should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to avoid contaminating other goods during shipping.  Consider whether any of these items should be replaced, now might be a good time for a new toilet brush…

When you arrive at your new home, before unpacking your bathroom boxes clean the new loo thoroughly.  You just don’t know if the previous occupants were as conscientious as you in their cleaning habits!  The experts at Jay’s, your Calgary moving company have helped many families with moving, we know how nice it is to come home to a clean bathroom!

Moving Pets – Moving Birds

by Greg - Your Mover! on February 5, 2012

Moving pets is always difficult and moving birds is no exception to that rule.  In fact, pet birds are sometimes even more susceptible to suffering dire consequences from the stress of moving than a cat or dog.  Here are some tips from the experts at Jay’s, your Calgary moving company, to help reduce moving stress for your feathered family members.

Before the move, keep your birds calm by placing them in a room that has already been emptied, away from the hubbub of packing and moving.

If your move is local it will be much easier on your pet bird, but you still don’t want to load them onto the moving truck where they might be exposed to exhaust fumes and fluctuations in temperature.  It’s probably best if you relocate them in your own vehicle (inside a cage, of course) because they will be reassured by your presence and you can make sure that the transition is over quickly.

Long distance moves are trickier, if the pet must travel by air you will need to acquire an approved carrier for the birds.  Make sure that arrangements are settled well in advance of your move if you are moving birds by air or hiring a pet transport service.

Even for a long distance move it will be less stressful on your bird if you can relocate them in your own vehicle.  This may require some planning too, especially if you need to arrange overnight accomodations.  You’ll have to find lodgings that will allow you to bring the birdcage inside your room to keep your feathered friends safe from temperature fluctuations or theft.

Pack a bag with enough supplies for the duration of the trip, including fresh food and water, a cage cover, an avian first aid kit, and some of your bird’s favorite toys.  Familiar things will help your bird relax and reduce your pets stress.

Once you arrive at your new home, place the bird in its regular cage in a quiet room.  Try and spend a little time with your pets so that they don’t feel as though they’ve been abandoned in a strange place.  After a few days your birds will become accustomed to the new surroundings.

Moving birds, just as with moving any pets, can be quite stressful for them.  The experts at Jay’s Moving advise you to take the time to do the little things that will put your pets at ease and you (and they) will have a much better moving experience.
