We can’t always time these things to make it easy…if you need to move shortly after the birth of a child or within the first year or two of your childs’ life there are a few things you might want to consider. Moving with your baby has its own set of concerns that are quite different than moving with older children. Here are a few tips from the experts at Jay’s, your Calgary moving company.
There is plenty of advice about how to make the transition to a new home, neighborhood or city easier for your children, but what about moving with babies? You needn’t worry if they’ll adjust to a new school or make friends in a new neighborhood, that will come in due time.
Baby’s needs are much simpler, but more immediate (if you are the parent or caregiver to an infant, this is not news to you!) Food, warmth, a comfy place to sleep and play and prompt attention to bodily hygiene (you know what I mean), as well as personal safety are the critical elements of infant care at any time, including during your relocation.
Somehow you need to provide these elements during the course of your move, which may be tough, especially with a long distance move. And if you’re moving during winter, or in the heat of summer you must also take care to keep your baby warm enough in transit (if it’s cold) or in a cool spot during hot weather. As tempting as it may be to let your sleeping baby remain in the car while you attend to other moving chores…don’t!!
Make sure that you don’t pack all of the baby’s clothes and supplies into boxes for the moving truck. You should always have:
- Ample diapers;
- Several changes of clothes;
- Blankets;
- Wipes;
- Diaper rash cream, and
- Any other medications your baby might need with you, and within easy reach.
If you’re not nursing your baby, you’ll need prepared bottles of formula, and for older babies, appropriate snacks and meals to sustain them for the duration.
If at all possible, it might be wise to arrange for someone to care for your baby during the move and until the initial hubbub of unpacking is over. You will find it much easier (and probably safer) to bring your baby into your new home once your shipment has been delivered and you’ve begun to settle in. Now is the time to call on Grandparents for help, if they’re willing and capable.
A reliable moving company like Jay’s can take care of your household belongings, delivering your shipment on time and on budget. And a little planning and forethought on your part will ensure that your move will go smoothly, even when you’re moving with your baby!
